Balls Bluff Battlefield

Ball’s Bluff Battlefield Regional Park and National Cemetery is located near Leesburg, Virginia, which is about 45 minutes south of Frederick Maryland on Route 15.  The Cemetery is small, with 54 graves in a half-acre, and all but one are unknown.  The Park is managed by Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority.  Local battlefield guides conduct walking tours of the Ball’s Bluff Battlefield and National Cemetery.

The Battle of Ball’s Bluff was small, but an important defeat for the Union Army early on in the war. It brought to light the political nature of many of the Union Army Officer’s appointments. This knowledge brought about a change in the operations of the Union Army.
